Please read the following information about Artists Space's Intern/Volunteer program before you proceed with your application:

Purpose of the Program
To offer individuals involved in or interested in contemporary visual arts the opportunity to participate in the day-to-day operations of an alternative arts organization. Interns work in the following areas: Operations, Curatorial, and the Irving Sandler Artists File.

Starting Date
Applications are accepted on a rolling basis. Most internships are scheduled on a fall, spring, and summer term basis.

Duration
The intern/volunteer program is designed for a commitment of 2-6 months. Academic credit can be arranged with sponsoring institutions. Volunteers can be scheduled on an on-call basis.

Requirements
Interns will be selected on the basis of their interest in and their knowledge of art history, contemporary art, and arts administration. Initiative and openness to team work are essential, as is a willingness to participate in all aspects of gallery management. Applicants of diverse backgrounds are encouraged to apply. Computer and installation skills will greatly enhance a candidate’s application.

Stipend
No stipends are available.

Accomodations
Living arrangements are to be made by the applicant.

All Internships Include: Front desk support, running errands, assisting with installation and de-installation, and general office support. Familiarity with Windows ‘95 and Excel is helpful. Interns undertake independent research projects involving the present exhibitions, archives, or the Artists File database. Interns also complete more long-term curatorial and organizational projects on an ongoing basis.

Because Artists Space is a small organization with a limited number of full-time staff, the work that interns are asked to do varies according to project deadlines and the exhibition calendar. The following descriptions outline the kinds of work offered to interns.

Operations
All interns (except the Artists File intern) are supervised by the Gallery Manager with the coordination of all divisions of the organization. This includes, but is not limited to:

• Installation and de-installation of exhibitions
• General maintenance of the gallery space
• Interaction with the public
• Assisting with the preparation of important meetings, mailings, and projects
• Preparation and installation of exhibitions.

Curatorial
Interns may be asked to assist the Curator with the following:

• Correspondence with galleries, museums, magazines, and artists
• Preparation and installation of exhibitions
• Processing of artists’ submissions and slides

Irving Sandler Artists File

This area of the gallery offers a specific position called the Artists File Intern. The intern’s work involves assisting the Artists File Coordinator in maintaining this resource in its digital and physical formats; coordinating appointments; helping artists, curators, educators, and the public use the file. Macintosh proficiency and Photoshop and/or database experience is helpful.
