Frequently Asked Questions

Q. Does all of the work submitted go on display at the event?

A. Yes. Night of 1,000 Drawings is a non-juried event. Up to two works by any individual artist will be displayed.

Q. Should my work be framed?

A. No. Work should be submitted unframed, as it is quite difficult for us to display work submitted with framing in place. Please DO NOT submit framed work.

Q. Can I pick up my unsold work up after the event?

A. No. If you wish to have unsold work returned to you, you MUST submit a self-addressed stamped envelope with your drawings. Please be sure the envelope is the correct size and has the proper postage.

Q. How will the work be displayed?

A. The work will be clipped to laundry-line style cords that will run through much of the gallery.

Q. Writing my contact information on the back of my work will damage it. What should I do?

A. Please attach your contact information to the work by means of some non-damaging adhesive tape such as drafting tape or a tab with your info on it. We ask that you do not use Post-It notes to attach your information onto your work, as Post-Its can and do fall off during the transport/hanging of the work.

Q. How are drawings priced?

A. Drawings are priced at $50 (up to 8x10 inches) and $100 (8x10 inches and larger)

Matters of Sensation

Matters of Sensation is a group exhibition of projects by fourteen architecture studios in the United States, all from a new generation of practitioners. Whereas architects’ use of computers first affected shape and structure, the participants in this exhibition address the way materials are not just about construction choices but also a means of creating diverse sensations in a space, focusing on the effects produced by the materials’ textures and surfaces. Through playful manipulation of such elements, beauty, ornament, and pattern have thus found their way back into contemporary design.

The best of these explorations avoid a neo-utilitarian tone in favor of aesthetic and psychological investigations. They are voluptuous productions that aspire to elicit a heightened awareness of our material environment. Such efforts became supercharged by the introduction of modeling software into academic studios in the early 1990s, followed soon after by rendering and animation software and then by digital fabrication. In the jump from a digital or virtual architecture to new modes of architectural fabrication usually described as research-oriented, productions must now be evaluated according to their success at evoking in the viewer material sensations and corporeal effects.

Unaligned in their interests and bored by old debates, the group of young architects featured in Matters of Sensation produce work that attempts to answer no questions, solve no problems, and broach no oppositions. It is, rather, about a fascination with architectural forms that induce sensation—about fantasy, intimacy, and sci-fi, and, above all, about experiencing pleasure.

Expanded Art Ideas

Expanded Art Ideas, Artists Space’s arts education program, has the mission of encouraging both mainstream and special education students in New York City’s public schools to develop a personal artistic voice and to utilize their individual creative capacities by providing them with the skills to communicate, document, and publicly exhibit their innovations and talents. The program’s courses augment 6th, 7th, and 8th grade classroom curricula not just in the visual arts, but in language arts as well. Since its inception, the program has closely adhered to New York State standards for teaching visual arts and most recently with New York City’s Blueprint for Teaching and Learning in the Arts: Visual Arts Benchmarks.

Program History

In 1995, Expanded Art Ideas was conceived by Thread Waxing Space’s Executive Director Ellen Salpeter and Art Education Director Chrysanne Stathacos. When Thread Waxing Space closed, Expanded Art Ideas was adopted by Artists Space. Since that time, the program has grown to encompass five formal course offerings, Portfolio Development, Artists in/ed Space, Arts & Literacy: Bookmaking, Raise the Flag, and Threads of History: Curriculum Quilts. Now more than a decade-old, the program has a proven track record of providing multilingual artist educators-who are not only experienced and innovative educators, but also practicing, award-winning artists-constructive art supplies, and indispensable guidance to New York City public school students. Expanded Art Ideas is funding by a variety of highly competitive sources, including NYSCA and corporations like Tommy Hilfiger and Verizon. Participating students are regularly recognized for artistic achievement outside of the program. Most recently, in 2006 three of our students from Nathan Straus PS 140 to receive silver keys for drawing in the Scholastic Art Awards, and their work was exhibited at the Brooklyn Museum.
