A common household
steam iron is both palette and brush to Willie Cole, who
first exhibited at Artists Space in 1989. In Steaming
Hot, Cole reexamins surrealist Man Ray's iconic Cadeau (Gift),
replacing his flatiron and nails with a modern steam iron
and soft white feathers. the resulting cadeau is
the antithesis of its muse, and an almost tribal metaphor
for both physical and spiritual cleansing.
