A R T I S T ' S   S T A T E M E N T   :   K a t h e r i n e   D e s m o n d   1 9 9 7

I am making "flat constructions" on wood. They may look like collages but there is no glue involved. I arrange any or all of these materials: gesso, oil paint, graphite, ink, charcoal, gouache, watercolor, enamel, paper, vellum, and cut up plastic bag...to a point of certitude. In the process, I hammer all this together with small copper tacks, left visible for-the-most-part. I rip away or add parts at any time to move the piece along.

Finally, I either enclose the finished construction with metal that I cut, paint, and fit around the edges of the board or I float it in a painted wooden frame. The possibilities seem endless and the activity involved suits my needs perfectly, each being approached as a purely visual, very experimental event in which I may or may not recognize aspects of the world I see around me.
