The long thin lines in these drawings are created one by one in a slow repetitive process. As I strech out the lines of ink and lay them down in wet resin, I have the (pointless) desire in mind to make them perfectly even and straight. The lines must also never break, touch or cross one another -- a simple operation but one requiring physical and mental concentration. After the sheet of paper is full of parallel lines, what was so carefully laid out is disrupted in different ways. Some of what appears to occur by chance is "programmed" into the work beforehand through minute adjustments to the process. The resulting patterns I create in these drawings suggest the electronic encodings of the world found in scientific images, while at the same time they track the conditions and events of their own production.
