Artist's Statement

For these paintings, I experimented with the patterns of woodgrain. I was interested in communicating with nature and pop-everything--advertising, design, and packaging colors. It's an obvious paradox that crystallized with the pallette; the activity of the grain was enhanced by the bright, 'unnatural' colors. The uniqueness of the natural patterns defined whether some wood should remain as a formal element of the painting, or be used as the not-so-imaginary grid from which to resolve the painting.

I was also keen on making corner diptychs, to activate the architectural possibilities of paintings. I liked the idea of placing oneself at an angle to the work as it recedes into the corner of the wall, and then using complex color relationships to have a forced perspectival shift.
