above to view artist's work I collect material for my paintings by being an urban gardener, growing plants
in my apartment, taking photographs of flowers and trees, and cutting out pictures
from magazines and making collages. Japanese woodblock prints and ancient scrolI
paintings with their delicate and strong graphic design seem to influence the
way I order and compose.
Narratives involving stories of explorers, alpinists, whalers and religious
saints (St. Jerome in particular) and their tales of survival in formidable
lands fascinate me, and often serve as the basis for my own personal landscapes:
compressed images of flowers, trees and, mountains without human figures. The
Renaissance painter, Joachim Pantinir, is of special interest to me. His romantic
landscapes demonstrates the seductive power of nature over man.
The sensation of wilderness I seek has a beauty that is comic and tragic. I've
found it in the wild lakes of the Adirondacks or in television science shows,
but just as much in the man-made landscape of Central Park and even in the Disney
or Coney Island fantasy theme park version of nature.
