Artist's Statement

Much of my work reflects my experience growing up in a postwar suburban, working class development in Long Island; blandness and repetition merged with hope and possibility. My dad was a cabinetmaker with a shop in our basement. My ongoing interest in structures that we build and utilize for everyday living come from years playing and making worlds and places in the basement. We constructed shelters in the backyard and around chairs.

I often build fragments of places. At times my structures house feelings or experiences that I want to evoke. I like to convey a sense of time; before and after; as if we are experiencing something that is in process. My structures and the images within are often ordinary objects and activities that encompass the everyday. Iím interested in the interactions and gestures that exist in our private and public spheres.

More recently my narrative is revealed by use of light, shadow and movement, by the use of video, motorized objects and projected shadows. My structures are often generic and dysfunctional; one cannot enter or use them - they remain distant, models of a transient time and place.

The possibilities that exist in community, people and places, how we order things in and around ourselves, are of great interest to me.
