Artist Statement
In my studio practice I am engaged
in a direct dialogue with the minimalist-post-minimalist work of the 60s
and 70s. I use this period of art history as a touchstone to ground my
work and try, in my own way, to work within its tenants.
Following the tradition of minimalism, I have made a conscious decision to limit
the materials that I work with. I have chosen to use what might be found in
a typical basement, attic, or garage-- scraps of paneling, plywood, carpet,
old basketballs, beer cans, etc.- the detritus of Americana.
A few years ago I began using found stereo speakers as a contemporary equivalent
of the minimalist cube. Through repeated use, I extended this idea until the
original source was so thoroughly absorbed that the work produced no longer
resembled speakers or cubes.
My work in the commercial film industry as a grip has also been incorporated
into my work. Part of a grips job is the construction of sets, consequently
I have adopted many of the same building techniques which has produced work
that echoes film sets but functions in an entirely different manner.
