Artist Statement
The series Corporate Casual emerged as a mixed response to corporate culture in general and the fine art gallery system in particular. Incorporating graphic design, performance, sculpture and photography, I question existing social structures and the power relationships that keep them intact. In the corporate world, the bottom line is profit. Employees show up to work to earn a living and employers, no matter how noble their business aims, must always think about maintaining or expanding their market share to survive the highly competitive business world. In aiming for a comfortable survival, individuals and institutions make compromises.
My photographic imagery reflects the employees perspective, capturing views of daily banality. Riding the line between sardonic and sincere, the titles of the images hint at the mindset of the employee or the implications of seemingly innocuous objects. The series also contains a variety of sculptural elements that reflect how corporate culture utilizes photography for identification, decoration, and communication. Creating an intentionally generic looking logo for use on business cards, stationary, website and even on an engraved pen, I establish an identity that is not particular to one company, but expresses a commonality between corporations. The website itself uses tongue-in-cheek text that sounds alluring, but offers no specific information until one stumbles across the journal section. The journal chronicles a performance piece enacted between January and June of 2003. Dressed in suit and tie while carrying an aluminum briefcase, I meandered the galleries of Chelsea, New York hoping to draw some attention. My two rules were not to interact with anyone unless approached and never to lie. The performance captures the importance of perception, the dangers of assumptions, and the hopes of ambition.
The process of Corporate Casual examines the cultural crossover of business life, artistic practice and personal space. Artists who wish to earn a living from their art are not immune to the compromises necessary to establish oneself within the commercial elite of the gallery system, despite the romantic associations of artist as rebel or savant. In fact, the process is very similar to that of any other profession. You must network, take calculated risks, work hard and keep your fingers crossed. Anyone attempting to climb a social ladder is subject to the growing overlap of work life and home living. From conference calls at the kitchen table to shopping on line at the office, I am interested in the cultural phenomena that result when what is personal and what is institutional intertwine.
