Artist Statement
Crestfallen with Flora & Fauna:
In 'Crestfallen with Flora & Fauna' I have created a series of crests for
imaginary lands, which stem from different aspects of my real life in NYC. The
crests with their accompanying supports and mottos reveal affairs of the heart,
friendship, vices, familial relations, lands both real and imagined and my canine
obsession.
The system of heraldry has been traced back to the beginning of the Thirteenth century. By devising a personal and an apparently fictitious language of heraldry, I have created both an homage and a subversion of this historically rich practice. This invented language describes in visual terms, my internal landscape re-imagined in heroic terms; a world comprised of my "alternative family" and the "cultural geography" found in my adopted home of NYC. Within this framework I am creating a map of my personal landscape. A crest of my own creation will represent each of the characters that inhabit this landscape (fellow artists, friends and pets).
My sculpture practice explores the
psychologically charged, tactile experiences that form our day to day lives. These
common, daily occurrences provide both the structural and visual keys that allow
and inspire my sculpture. By selectively editing and transforming some of these
seemingly mundane experiences into my work, I am able to examine my relationship
between my physical body and the constricted/confining structure of the urban
setting.
...one might closely pass someone on the train causing their bare arm to brush
against yours creating an instant flush of embarrassment and excitement...
This simultaneous feeling of repulsion and delight fuels my work. Via my sculpture, I entice the audience to re-examine their bodys comfort zone.
